Tasmania’s second most populated area after Hobart sits on the picturesque Tamar River. The largest city in Northern Tasmania, Launceston, is home to a population of around 100,000 people and counting. This makes Launceston the second-largest city on the island and another popular stop for tourists making their way around the island.
Highlights of Northern Tasmania
Launceston itself is characterised by old-world elegance, glorious townhouses and beautiful shop front facades in the heart of the city. There is a strong sense of community as you make your way around the walkable streets, with a bustling cafe scene and many small boutiques at your disposal. As one of Tasmania’s most liveable cities, there is a strong emphasis on creating a green and lively city, made even more evident by Launceston’s Cataract Gorge existing almost in the city itself!
The city of Launceston is much smaller geographically than Hobart, as well as population. This market is, therefore, easier to understand for new investors, as well as offers a lower price point to enter the market. Bluechip neighbourhoods such as East Launceston continue to yield impressive returns, however, there are many nearby suburbs worth considering on the outskirts of the city centre.
Given the geographic constraints on new developments in the city centre, Launceston’s property prices continue to rise strongly. New developments are increasingly being pushed further out of the city itself, leaving a short supply of rental properties in the heart of the city. Neighbourhoods such as South Launceston and West Launceston are highly sought after and in close proximity to many schools, the Launceston General Hospital, and the central business district itself.
In the immediate surrounds of Launceston you will find one of Tasmania’s most prominent wine regions known as the Tamar Valley. This area is home to many notable cellar doors and vineyards, each offering locals and visitors a hearty display of wine and farm-to-table produce. Many of these vineyards are located on the edge of the Tamar Valley, however stretch as far North as Delamere Vineyards en route to popular beach spot Bridport.
